At-a-glance

Over the past three years, the divorce rate for women in the military with civilian husbands has risen to eight percent.  The branch with the highest rate is the Marine Corps, followed by the Army, then Air Force, and finally the Navy.  Research has shown that divorce rates have increased with these specific couples because of the lack of support for civilian husbands.  There are countless programs that tend to the needs of military wives, but virtually none for military husbands.  This, along with the double standard that says men should be the warriors in the relationship, puts heavy strain on the marriages.
Speaking as a female who has plans to attend the United States Naval Academy and become an officer in either the Navy or Marine Corps, this worries me.  With equality between men and women in the armed forces rising, I believe there should also be equality among the benefits their families receive.
