On May 31, while graduates at La Quinta and Indio high schools were celebrating one of the most memorable days of their life, graduation attendees were suffering the worst heat so far this year, with temperatures soaring to the 110's.
Late in the afternoon, police alerted paramedics about women at Indio High School and La Quinta High School who suffered from heat-related illness.  Both were successfully treated and are now out of harm's way.
The east end of the valley peaked at 115 degrees, easily breaking the 107-degree record set at the Thermal airport in 1997, according to National Weather Service figures. The west end climbed to 114 degrees at the Palm Springs International Airport, tying the record set May 31, 2001.
According to predictions, the valley is expected to cool down just a bit over the weekend and for Wednesday's Desert Mirage graduation ceremony. As if that's any consolation.
