Woodworking one is a class at Laramie High School where the students learn the basics of woodworking and how the tools work.

This class, taught by Shawn Dovey, is about teaching students the basis of woodworking and how to use the tools. The class is the most basic wood class students can take at the high school.

Throughout the year students are assigned to do many projects. The first project students had to do was to make a match box. After that they had to make a bowl on the lath. The project they are on now involved with is making a duck napkin holder. The next project the start is a door harp.

Throughout the year students learn many different techniques. One technique students will learn is the use of many different tools. One tool they will learn how well is the band saw. This saw has a blade that spins on a wheel and cuts irregular shapes. Another common tool is the scroll saw which is similar to the band saw except the blade doesn’t spin on a wheel it only goes up and down. Also it cuts irregular shapes.

Another major tool used is the disk sander. It is good for sanding items wit round ends and for sanding anything.

One student calls the class his favorite because he gets to use his hands. He added, “Mr. Dovey is a really cool teacher and as long as we work and get our stuff done we can do whatever we want. The other thing that is really sweet is the fact that we get to make real cool stuff.”
