There will be a new class for next year at Laramie High School or rather it is replacing an old one.  Advanced Placement Chemistry will be replacing Chemistry 2, but there will not be much of a difference between the classes the same concepts will be covered. AP Chemistry will be more preparing for the AP test in May it will also be at a faster pace for the AP test. There will also be summer work to get a head start on concepts.

Angelice Varca, a science teacher at LHS, has pushed to get Chemistry 2 to turn into an AP class. “They will learn the concepts from Chemistry 1 as review, and then they will learn kinetics, nuclear chemistry, and acid base chemistry, equilibrium, thermo chemistry, organic chemistry, among other topics,” Varca said. They will also be learning many other things out of a AP Chemistry book.

There are many benefits of taking AP Chemistry. “They will learn a lot of Chemistry… they will also take the AP Chemistry test which is prep for college”, said Varca. “I think taking hard classes helps students prepare for the rigor of college.” Students from previous Chemistry 2 classes have taken the AP test and have done well, “It will be a challenging test,” Varca said.

The class will not be all about the test. Even if students don’t do well on the test they will learn concepts that will help them in their future college Chemistry classes.
