Jerkin Chicken is the new restaurant in the space that was previously home to Submarino’s, bringing a new culture of food to the neighborhood, instead of the normal pizza, cheeseburgers and Chinese take-out.
The decorum of the store has not changed much inside the store since Submarino’s left, but a new type of atmosphere and vibe has certainly arrived. The Jamaican-style cooking smells wonderful, and the employees behind the counter are friendly and kind, asking customers if they need anything more with their order. They seem more than happy to help out and make sure customers have a great food experience.
The menu contains many items such as jerk chicken, beef patties, french fries and macaroni and cheese. The best deal is the “Student Special” for only $3.99 (plus tax), which comes with jerk chicken and rice or a choice of french fries. This is what students may want to try their first time.
The jerk chicken is dry and spicy, but certainly delicious, especially when dipped in the mild Jamaican BBQ sauce. The beef patties are excellent. Although the mac and cheese is very cheesy and the fries are crispy, the macaroni is dry and the fries are really greasy. In addition to that, the Jamaican Ginger Beer is a soft drink that has a strong aftertaste that some patrons may not enjoy.
On the bright side, Jerkin Chicken is a great new restaurant with friendly service, good food and a new flavor for those who are tired of the same meals each day. Unfortunately, this restaurant may have opened too late, since the school would have provided the most customers. I hope the eatery stays around and keeps on providing quality food.
