This year’s pep rally was one of the most successful, according to assistant dean Michele Bruce. However, students interviewed by the Student Voice voiced antipathy and said that the activities still were not interesting.

Bruce said that the point of the pep rally is to outdo the previous year and to try to raise the overall spirit of the school.

Students interviewed complained about a lack of entertainment, although the pep rally featured “probably 10 to 15” activities, according to Bruce. Junior Cellestine Mabeya said she found only the obstacle course and the Zumba challenge interesting.

“It was corny; there was only two [activities] that was entertaining,” Mabeya said. “Last year everything was more interactive.”

Permanent substitute Dolores Bullock said the pep rally was very exciting and she was excited the Zumba turned out so well.

“I do Zumba four times a week,” Bullock said. “There wasn’t an entertainment activity, so I added in the Zumba segment to entertain the kids more.”

Bullock went on to say that every class did a “fabulous job” and she couldn’t pick which class was the best because they all worked very hard, including the staff members. Everyone only had one week to practice the dance  moves. Bullock said they were very “independent.”

However, junior Dante Alston disagreed that the Zumba challenge was interesting at all.

“It could have been much better,” Alston said. “The Zumba challenge was very boring and didn’t stick out at all. One of the best activities was the volleyball game.”

Sophomore Jarell Joyner said that the teachers shouldn’t have won the volleyball match because of the weird scoring. The students were ahead by “three points” and then it was announced that whoever scored the next point won the game. Unfortunately for the students, the teachers scored the next point.

Bruce explained how every year big improvements are on their way for school spirit.

“When we did the first pep rally ever, it was a huge accomplishment,” Bruce said. “No one ever thought that we could bring all the students together and see them behave.”

Freshman Jonah Marcial said the pep rally was fun and that it “pretty much met his standards” of what he thought it was going to be.

“It was pretty fun; the activities were interesting to watch,” Marcial said. “There could’ve been a better variety of music though.”

Joyner said that the pep rally didn’t meet up to his standards, but it was still pretty much interesting all together and he hopes it improves for the better next year.

Bruce said that she is happy that the pep rally was successful and she hopes it keeps improving.

“When we have a pep rally, and it’s successful, it’s a really good thing,” Bruce said. “ It makes me happy to see all the kids behaving so well.”
