Two hundred forty-one students were absent on Bring Your Child to Work Day, April 26. According to Dean Erie Lugo, it was the first time in the school’s ten-year history that so many students were out of school.

“The State Department encouraged schools to participate in Bring Your Child to Work Day,” Dean Erie Lugo said. “We encourage intake of this activity."

Assistant dean Sean Sawyer said he was “disturbed that a lot of kids didn’t come to school.”

“I didn’t think they went to their parents job,” Sawyer said. “Everybody took advantage of the excuse.”

Sophomore Jarrel Joyner said he “took the excused absence as an advantage.”

“I thought the excused absence was unnecessary because you're going to expect the students to take advantage of it,” Joyner said.

According to Lugo, more than half of the student body was absent on Bring Your Child to Work Day.

“If the kids picked that day just to hang out, it’s a shame because they lost a value of education,” Lugo said.

Joyner said that he was really tired of school.

“School is really exhausting and that’s why I didn’t come,” Joyner said.

English teacher Roberto Inclan said Bring Your Child to Work Day is important because “a lot of our students don’t have working experience.”

“Next time we should do a better job in explaining the purpose of Bring Your Child to Work Day, and what is expected from the students and parents,” Inclan said.

With so many students absent from school, little work was done in classes.

“I taught some classes depending on how many students were out,” science teacher Thomas Frech said. “If there was less than half of the students in my class, they didn’t have to do any work.”

Nevertheless, Lugo said that “Bring Your Child to Work Day is a great idea.”

“[It’s] hands-on experience,” Lugo said. “Even if you work at McDonald’s, it's a great idea to bring your child with you, so they can see if this is what they want.”
