"Students are not permitted to leave the building during the lunch period for any reason," Fairborn High School’s student handbook clearly states. It explains how students who are not G.L.E. (Guided Learning Experience) cannot leave the school unless signed out by a legal guardian. Yet, everyday dozens of students leave for lunch. Why should students follow this rule if the school does not enforce it?
Fairborn High School’s students endure a seven hour-long school day. This consists of seven class periods and one lunch period.
"I defiantly think that students should be allowed to leave for lunch, Students feel trapped in this school when they are confined in this building for seven hours," Said sophomore Jackie Lucas.
"We tried to have open campus once during lunch for the exams," said assistant principal Mrs. Belinda Banks. "But the restaurants around the school called in and complained about the students."
"We know they leave we try our best to monitor but sometimes that doesn’t work out," Banks said regarding students leaving for lunch.
If the school staff is aware of students leaving for lunch, why should they sit back and let it happen? And why shouldn’t students do it if no one is going to stop them?
Fairborn High School tells their students their not allowed to leave the school ground for lunch. Yet the staff does not enforce this rule. Students know that they can get away with leaving for lunch, so they usually do so.
Obviously, some students could not handle the freedom of being able to leave for lunch, which is why it would be necessary to have restrictions on who would actually be allowed to leave school grounds.
Senior Katie Jarrett suggested that if a student does leave for lunch, they must sign themselves out. That way they are accounted for where they are. Jarrett also suggested that the parents sign a consent form at the beginning of the year (along with the rest of the forms they have to fill out), saying that their students can leave for lunch, and they get a pass of some sort.
Although students know they are not allowed to leave for lunch, they also know that the rule will not be enforced and sometimes even encourages it, which is why students leave for lunch everyday.
