From the first day of kindergarten, US students at public schools recite the Pledge of Allegiance. While no one is forced, there is the expectation that all will state the pledge. This expectation exists in Tahlequah High School; I watch the mass of students in my advisory stand for the pledge; however, most recall the words half-heartedly at most. I have observed the same spectacle at school assemblies.

I believe this epidemic is the result of the decline in patriotism in this country. People now protest at soldiers’ funerals. Others tear down the country because of one politician’s actions. All this leaves high school students confused about whether to love or hate the country that they live in.

The solution to the problem is for an increase in patriotism from teens and their elders; let’s look for the good and acknowledge it. We aid the needy. We have freedom to act among other benefits. Doesn’t everyone know these facts about the US, but who brings up these good qualities?

Teens need the help of elders to realize how great of a country we live in. Until this happens, teens will not have the pride to stand with their eyes captured by the majesty of the flag and recite from their hearts the Pledge of Allegiance.
