Maintaining healthy eating habits can be difficult in a society filled with fats, artificial flavorings, and fast food. Even the latest media topic, pink slime, has consumers questioning their choices.  However, living a healthy lifestyle is not impossible.

The priority of nutritious eating habits is to feel good rather than to be as skinny as possible. Weighing less on the scale doesn't necessarily mean you're living a healthy lifestyle. By changing quarter pound hamburger lunches into vegetable filled salads, you'll begin to feel more energized and lower your risk of illnesses.

To have success in changing your diet, its best to make small changes over a period of time than sudden drastic changes. Small changes will help you achieve your goal of a healthy and nutritious life because crash and fad diets are often unsuccessful because of unobtainable goals.

Your body can never have enough water. Water rids you of toxins and keeps the body hydrated. Thirst can often be mistaken for hunger, so drinking more water will lessen your food intake. Headaches are also common side effects of not drinking enough water; so, instead of popping Tylenol or Advil, drink more water.  High calories are also hidden in beverages, so drinking water instead of a glass of pop will save you from calorie intake that won't satisfy your hunger.

Contrary to popular belief, snacking is encouraged! The difference between a good and bad snack is how and what you eat. Snack foods such as chips and pretzels are low in nutrients and high in calories. By choosing an apple or a small sandwich instead you will receive more nutrients and satisfy your hunger more with a smaller amount of food.

Fast food and sit-down restaurants do not have to be ruled out of your diet. Moderation is the key to success. It's okay to eat fast food occasionally, but making it a habit is not recommended. Avoid anything that is fried, crispy, or covered in sauce. These types of food will have more calories than expected. Beware of hidden calories, and don't order appetizers! The main dish of the meal with have plenty of food to fill you up. A simple Chip & Dip appetizer from Chili's has 1130 calories and 2460 mg of sodium!

Watching television while eating is one of the downfalls to dieting. By watching TV, you're not paying attention to what you're eating and you intake more food. Eating on the go or standing at the kitchen counter to eat can also have the same negative effect.  So turn off the TV shows and sit down with your family to enjoy a meal!

Salt is a necessity to our diets, but too much can lead to high blood pressure and even heart attack. Processed food is loaded with sodium, so avoid canned soups and packaged TV dinners. Also fresh vegetables are nearly salt-less so cut up your own vegetables instead of buying them from a can.

With all these diets suggestions, exercise cannot be forgotten! Thirty minutes of exercise three times a week is the minimum suggestion by nutritionists. In addition to eating better exercise will make you feel stronger and help you burn more calories.

All of these simple steps will help you to become a healthier person. Changing little things in your lifestyle will help you avoid disease, live longer, and feel better about yourself. It's never to late to change your diet, so start making your small changes now!
