Look around. What are majority of the students at ERHS doing? Taking monotonous notes, dazing off into far away daydreams, and taking naps where their mind is filled with something other than school. Many students here at the high school say they waste time by napping. Some see napping as an activity that loses time, or an activity that takes up time to get through class.
“I think it’s very irresponsible [to take naps]. But sometimes the classes are too long so I don’t blame students who do take naps,” said senior Danielle Layne.
Naps in school can be harmful to your education, but can be helpful to you. According to www.About.com, people who don’t get enough sleep can be prone to increased drowsiness around eight hours after waking. For example, generally I go to bed around eleven or eleven thirty. I wake up between five thirty and six, so in my schedule; I would get drowsy around one forty five pm.
In a student’s case, power naps are the most obvious and they can give you more patience, better reaction time, less stress, more efficiency, better health, and increased learning. A power nap can help students take in more lectures, or help students pay more attention to the information a teacher can be providing you.
School is an important part of a student’s life. So, what happens if you do fall asleep during class and miss the next test answers, or miss what is going to happen tomorrow? It is no one’s fault but your own.
“I feel bad when they get yelled at, but they are missing out because school is valuable,” said Layne.
Among students at ERHS, many think that taking a nap is a personal decision. Students say that the ‘boring’ classes are more likely to have more students taking naps. Layne believes that the time of day affects students as well.
“I think first hour and fourth hour bother students most, because first is in the morning and fourth is right after lunch when you’re full,” said Layne.
If we weren’t in school, what else would we do? Probably sit around at our house and watch some uneducational television show about the current drama in reality. Napping has its advantages. I think we’d all rather be here at school sleeping, than sitting at home doing nothing of importance. Naps do a body good.
“Take a nap once a day, it’ll make you feel better,” said junior Cody Roberts.
