Lebron James and Others Celebrate Win -
Heat Championship
The ringing of pots and pans banging, and seas of red and white ran through the streets of Biscayne Boulevard on the night that the Miami Heat snagged a 121- 106 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Miami celebrated a big hometown win, as the Miami Heat took home a highly anticipated championship. Lebron James, who set out to redefine his image in Miami finally won his 1st NBA title, and was deemed the MVP player of the Finals. It was the big 3; Wade, James, and Bosh who led the team to victory, with help along the way from other players: Battier, Chalmers, and Miller who brought the honor back to Miami, since the Heat’s previous win in 2006.
Olympics
Perhaps the most buzzed about news of summer 2012 were the London Olympics games. After four years of anticipation since the 2008 Beijing Olympics, London welcomed dozens of nations with an Opening Ceremony, which included a humorous skit with James Bond, and none other than, the Queen. American favorites like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Jordyn Weiber, Lolo Jones, and many others went to London in hopes of upholding several American gold titles. While several athletes continued to impress, others fell short of expectations, but nevertheless the U.S. was a sure leader in the medal count at the London Olympic Games.
Tom and Katie Split
Hollywood’s “it “couple, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have gotten divorced after 5 years of marriage. According to reports, Katie initiated the filing for divorce. It is rumored that Tom’s religion, the Church of Scientology played a role in Katie’s decision, but there is no definite answer from either Tom or Katie on why the two chose to split. Unlike, other Hollywood divorces the split was settled in less than ten days, and Hollywood is still shocked about the end of TomKat.
Obamacare
Politics have also played a large role in this summer’s buzz. The Supreme Court ruled in support of Obama’s Affordable Care Act. As a result, millions of families across the nation will continue to receive high-quality, yet affordable health care coverage. Obamacare, the name dubbed for the healthcare law, was enacted back in 2010, and after much controversy from opposing parties such as Republicans, the Supreme Court was set to rule whether the law was deemed unconstitutional, and in this incident, the opposing side lost. The ruling will not only affect Americans, but also home health care companies such as Medicare and Medicaid.
Colorado Shooting
The premier of The Dark Night Rises; the third and final installment of the Batman movie trilogy was widely-anticipated. Batman fans across the country went to midnight premieres, to catch the first glimpse of the film. For fans in Aurora, Colorado, their midnight movie turned into a midnight nightmare. A gunman dressed in black, entered the movie theater where the movie was screening and ignited fire on more than a dozen people in the theater. The shooter who dyed his hair bright orange before the shooting, told the police that he was the Joker (an antagonist in one of the Batman films), and that his apartment was booby-trapped. The accused gunman, a student who was in his first year of completing his PhD in neuroscience, was charged with 24 counts of murder. Twelve movie-goers died the night of the shooting, and 58 were wounded.
Paterno statue goes down at Penn state
Joe Paterno, a head football coach at Penn State once had a 7 foot bronze statue outside Beaver Stadium, but now after the child abuse scandal came to light, it was removed. Paterno failed to disclose the allegations on Sandusky over sexual child abuse accusations. As a result, Paterno was dismissed from his position, and his statue was removed over the summer. The Penn State scandal revolves around allegations that former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, was involved in sexually abusing young boys. In 2002, Paterno was informed of a suspected assault by Sandusky, and chose to report the suspicion to his superiors, but did not contact the police, putting him under harsh criticism.
