On Feb. 27, the Oldham County High School boys’ basketball team was victorious over the Trimble County Raiders, 74-35 in the first round of districts.

It was a defensive game from tip-off to the final buzzer as the Colonels forced 16 turnovers in the first half alone and held the Raiders to a mere 35 points.

“Our good defense allowed us to get the ball back in our hands quick, get in transition and run the break successfully,” Matt Moore, junior said.

With such an overwhelming win, the Colonel’s were feeling confident heading into the district final against long-time rivals, the South Oldham Dragons.

“We were pumped and ready to beat them for the third time,” Matt Day, junior said.

According to Day, the boys’ had to achieve several key points to ensure a victory. “We knew we had to eliminate three-point shot and maintain a strong post presence,” Day said.

The district final was a much closer game as both teams fought back and forth to control the pace of the game.

However, thanks to 25 bench points from Greg Finch, senior, and 16 points from Billy Payne, junior, the Colonel’s manage to bring the district championship home again with a 72-67 victory.

Finch’s and Payne’s combined 41 points made them obvious choices for the All-District team, they were joined by senior, Josh Kobel who also had a solid district performance.

After the district came regional’s where the Colonels have had some trouble where they have slipped up in past years.

But on March 7, the Colonels started off the regional tournament the right way with a 58-53 victory over Walton-Verona.

The student section for OCHS was on its feet the entire game cheering the Colonels on as the boys’ battled it out on the court.

The game remained close until the final seconds where the boys settled down and pulled out a victory.
