Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry of Nebraska tried to overturn this health care mandate by introducing the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, or Resolution 1179. Many congressmen have supported this act to overturn this mandate. The bill amends last year’s health care reform law to permit a health plan to decline coverage of specific services that are contrary to the religious beliefs of the sponsor or issuer of that plan, Republican Congressman Mike Coffman of Colorado said. Resolution 1179 was defeated on March 1 of this year. Originally, President Barack Obama tried to require religious hospitals and institutions to provide free birth control coverage for women, which was taken seriously by the Catholic Church and others who did not support this universal coverage. Making contraceptives part of a universal coverage would be a waste of time and money. Insurance companies’ money could be put to better use then paying for something not everyone will use nor need. Obama later said religious institutions can “opt-out” of this requirement, however it is a deception. Local churches are self-insured therefore religious institutions would be directly paying for birth control coverage, which they do not want or support. If the government does not overturn this mandate, the Catholic Church would slowly disappear because it would not back down on what it believes and stands for. “Christianity is under attack,” the Rev. Andrew Kemberling, Pastor of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Centennial, said. “We would be fined when we refuse to pay for this coverage, therefore the government would penalize us out of existence.” The Catholic Church would not back down from its beliefs and, therefore, churches, schools and hospitals would have to shut down. This is not a debate between Republicans and Democrats nor is it about the use of birth control, but a conflict between democracy and socialism. “The Constitution was founded on Christian principles,” Kemberling said. “Socialism would never be compatible with democracy.” By requiring these organizations to provide birth control, the government is violating the First Amendment rights of those who disagree with its use. Americans are supposed to have the freedom to voice their opinions, but the passage of this mandate forces opinions regarding birth control to be silenced. Women are allowed to choose whether or not to abort their unborn child, but the Catholic Church and other organizations cannot choose whether or not to give out free birth control? People should be able to choose an insurance company that lets the customer choose what coverage they want, not what the government wants. No one should be forced or required to supply or pay for birth control if its use is against his or her religious beliefs.
