With the start of spring, comes many students’ favorite event: class wars. This event is geared towards athletics, and consists of a volleyball competition, class games, girls powder-puff dodge ball, and the boys powder-puff dance routine. The second spirit week of the school year is also right around this time. The spirit days this year included decades day, twin day, class color day, lax bro day and pajama day. Both of these events are run by the Student Council.
The competition kicked off with the class volleyball tournament. All four grades had an A and B team, and the classes battled it out. The final round was a repeat of last year, with the Class of 2013 up against the Class of 2012 in the concluding match. It was a close game but the seniors came out on top, overpowering the juniors for the second year in a row.
The following week, on March 28th, was the eventful class games. Students filled the bleachers and took turns competing in events, which included the three legged sack and wheel barrow race, brain freeze, pudding eating contest, three point shoot out, ball train, super shoe show, cheese-ball toss, shoebox showdown and tug o’ war. Sophomores started out strong, winning first place in the first event. Seniors dominated next, winning the brain freeze and three point shootout, as well as the ball train by only a fraction of a second. Juniors had a comeback and finished strong when they won the pudding eating contest, cheese ball toss, shoebox showdown, and traditional tug o’ war. The most exciting part of the night was when juniors and seniors tied in the super shoe show and a winner could not be determined. The event had to be re-done and this time the juniors came out on top! The night ended in a game of four-way tug o’ war, putting the seniors in first.
The following day, classes competed in the girls powder puff dodge ball competition. Just before the final round, the event that everyone was waiting for finally arrived: boys powder-puff cheerleading. The juniors sponged up the competition and came in first with their intricate dancing, earning cheers from the crowd. The seniors came in second, surprising the crowd with their very own Nikki Minaj, adding icing on the cake. The freshman surpassed everyone’s expectations with their booty-poppin’ routine which placed them ahead of the sophomores, who made everyone chuckle with their freestyle dancing and girly outfits. In the final game of dodge ball, the juniors won the first of the three sets, but the seniors came back and won the second. After a nail-biting final set, the juniors triumphed.
Class wars is the conclusion to the year-long class competition. Events such as homecoming float, Halloween hallway, Christmas hallway and class wars create some friendly competition between grades, but, in the end, bring everyone together. Student Council President Toniann Riselvato (’12) says, “Despite the differences each class has and the rivalries we saw, the events were successful because everyone worked together to have some fun and try to win!” Hopefully this unique Lindenhurst tradition will continue for years to come.
