Every Friday night during the fall a group of students broadcast Ben Davis football games.

Well, one of those voices belongs to Brownsburg senior Kurt Darling, who comes to Ben Davis for the Area 31 broadcasting program.

Darling is the Sports Director for Giant 90.9 and is involved in a number of different radio shows that are broadcasted. He did the play-by-plays for the football team and has a radio show every Wednesday morning with two other students.

Darling started doing play-by-play last year for the boys’ basketball team. Ever since then, his broadcasting teacher Jon Easter has been working with him on improving his play-by-play skills to build him up for the football season.

"We started working on football play-by-play with him last year. It was a process and he worked really hard on it," Easter said.

Because Darling is from Brownsburg, he is able to have an unbiased perspective on the games. This gives a more accurate account of the game, although he does turn up the spirit for the Ben Davis students.

Darling has been nominated for or won several awards. He placed second in state for play-by-play personality and was a state finalist for radio air personality last year.

Easter had nothing but good things to say about his student.

"Kurt is solid. He’s a very good host," Easter said. "Some kids can only do sports or play-by-play, but Kurt is very balanced. He’s very good with listeners."

Outside of doing play-by-plays for the sports teams, Darling has a radio show called "Totally Sports" that airs every Wednesday morning from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. Ben Davis students Travis Kahl and Ben Kerr help host "Totally Sports" alongside Darling.

Darling does not only like talking about sports, he is a broadcaster at heart, enjoying every minute that he is on the air.

"Honestly, I enjoy the rush or feeling. Whenever I’m on the air, my heart beats and I just enjoy it. It’s like a drug," Darling said. "Although I hate public speaking, it’s a good substitute. It pushes me to keep pursuing in this field."

Darling’s love for broadcasting started when he had to job shadow someone in seventh grade.

He did not know what he wanted to do, but he wanted to see what goes on behind the scenes at a radio station. His mother set him up with a radio broadcaster and he just had a great time with it.

After high school, Darling plans to continue with broadcasting, planning to major in telecommunications. He has been accepted to a number of colleges, but has not decided exactly where he is going yet.

Thanks to Ben Davis, Darling has been able to continue doing what he loves. He has gotten a lot out of the Area 31 program, but at the same time, has given Ben Davis back just as much.

"This is a great experience," Darling said.
