Raza Week, organized by the Latino Student Union (LSU), ran through the week with a food fair, dance contest, interactive games, and a radio station performance.

On Monday, a traditional Cinco de Mayo celebration was served up with Mexican cuisine that ranged from tacos de carne asada to quesadillas.

“Our purpose for Raza Week is to clarify the real meaning of Cinco de Mayo and to celebrate the diversity of our Latino Culture,” said senior Juan Torres, LSU president. “Cinco de Mayo isn’t Mexican Independence Day but the victory of the small Mexican army against the large French army.”

On Tuesday, students gathered at the Grove to compete in the dance contest and play musical chairs.

LSU served up pan dulce, sweet bread, arroz con leche and flan for Latin American Desserts Day on Wednesday.

Super Estrella 103.1 came by on Thursday and held a dance contest. Latin American dishes such as traditional Salvadorian pupusas and drinks like horchata, a sweet rice drink, and tamarindo, were served at lunch.

Raza Week, in addition to celebrating Cinco de Mayo, also celebrates Latino culture and heritage. “Raza Week is like a Latino Spirit Week,” said senior Adriana Flores.
