Galesburg bowling kicked off their season when Coach Brad Bennewitz announced the team. “We can only have 15 girls, and it gets harder each year when more come and I have to cut them,” Bennewitz explained.
“The team this year will be the bomb because a lot of us have been together the past couple years and we know how well we work together,” explained Jonna John, junior. With one-third of the team being freshmen, there will be a lot of work to do.
Members, however, often have previous years of experience. Sophomore Abbie John said, “My friend’s grandma wanted me to join the YABA league at the bowling alley, to bowl with her grandson and my sister. I started in seventh grade,” John explained.
“I practice releasing to full extent so that I can knock down as many pins as possible,” senior Cristina Campos said.
Last season GHS bowling was not well known throughout the high school and Coach Bennewitz is going to try to change that view. With the help of media, the team wants to have good news in the announcements.
The first home meet was Dec. 4 against West Central. The varsity fell to the Heat by just 57 pins, but the J.V. won by 300.
The varsity team defeated Illini Bluffs 2419-2263 on Thursday, Dec. 13. Kerbi Boland led with 529 pins and Tiffany Carns contributed 523.
